How To Keep Betta Fish Healthy – For some people betta fish are their friends, just like a cat or a dog. A betta hobbyist can probably keep more than just one betta fish on their home. And of course keeping their friend on the top of the performance is a must. Betta keepers usually do anything to keep their betta happy and healthy. Here are some tips on how to keep your betta fish healthy.
Keep Your Water Temperature & pH Stable
Betta fish is a tropical fish. They love to swim in warm water and they could not bear a too cold or too hot water. So the first thing to check is how warm the water temperature and pH in their tank. Keep in mind that you need to keep the water temperature between 75-80 fahrenheit (24-27 celcius) and pH in around 7 on your betta tank. If it goes too low or too high your betta fish may suffer.
One useful trick to stabilize the water temperature and pH is by using catappa leaves or dried banana leaves. Catappa leaves and dried banana leaves can help you to stabilize the water temperature and pH also betta fish really loves them. Although catappa leaves can make your tank a bit brownish just like betta fish real habitat.
Always Check The Water Condition
Besides water temperature we also need to check the water condition. Water condition we are talking about includes the water cleanliness and water contents. If you have gravel and sand in your tank with also a filter I can assume your water cleanliness is mostly in good condition, because gravel can hide betta fish feces and a filter can circulate the water. If you do not use gravel and filter then you need to check whether their feces is too much at the tank or not. If it is too much then you should siphon them to throw away the feces and add some more water. Additional water can be a great boost to your betta fish health.
The best water to use for a betta fish is tap water. Avoid using water with too much content such as chlorine or too few content such as distilled water or purified water. We recommend to keep the tap water in minimum 12 hours (we usually do 24 hours) before adding a betta fish. It is to neutralize the water so betta fish is more pleasant when entering the water. We also recommend a 30% water change every week to keep you water condition almost on top.
Feed Them Sufficiently
Every living being needs food to survive therefore a bettafish does too. But actually a bit different with a dog or a cat where we can give them much food. Betta fish are a really food loving fish but they do not have much storage in their stomach, therefore if they eat too much it may effect to digestion problem. And digestion problem is the most terrifying problem for a betta fish where it can lead to a deadly disease.
So our recommendation is just feed your betta fish sufficiently. You can do it 1 time a day or 2 times a day. You can also read about how much to feed betta fish pellets here. We also recommend you to fast it for one day every week so their stomach have more time to digest the food. In fact betta fish is a tough fish which can survive without food for 3 days as long as they’re “drinking”.JK.
Keep Them Exercised
Humans do exercise to keep their body healthy and their metabolism good, and that is the same with betta fish. In a big tank betta fish can always swim around the tank, that is one exercise for a betta fish. The second is betta fish actually exercising when they are flaring. You will notice that they will spread their fins, harden their body and dancing (swimming) all around. You might see that it’s just like they’re mad at something, but it is a real exercise. Their body metabolism will be good if it’s regularly exercised.
But how to make them flare? If you keep more than one betta fish you can just face them and they will automatically flare. If you only keep one betta fish you can try using a small mirror and face it to them, in some cases you can also point your pen/finger to them and they will start flaring. Just try it.
Do a Quick Treatment If There Any Unhealthy Sign
A sick betta fish if not quickly treated can lead to more dangerous condition. Therefore we need to know the early signs of an unhealthy betta fish. When we have observed that our betta fish are acting strange then an action is required. Whether it is white spot, fin rot, ich, velvet, columnaris or dropsy, every disease can be healed if treated well. So act quick.
